K4's Monthly Newsletter
APRIL KINDERGARTEN NEWSLETTER
We will be on letters Xx, Yy, and Zz this month. The children are doing very well with letter identification. They are also doing well with beginning consonant sounds. They can produce the sounds, and identify the beginning letters of pictures. The only ones giving us much trouble at this point are the sounds of Ww and Yy. When you say the name Yy you make a Ww sound. This is confusing to anyone if you are not careful; so it is easy to understand why the children have some trouble. You might want to practice the Yy sound every once in a while. We tell the children to say to themselves, “Yy – yellow” to help them remember the sound of Yy.
We have learned 18 of our 24 sight words. We will continue to send home weekly books for the students to read. Please take the time to read to them and to listen to them read it to you. Remember that the, My “Ww” Book should be signed and returned on Monday each week. We will continue working on Unit 5 in our reading books. Vocabulary words for Unit 5 are: for, he, she, and has.
*Use the sight word cards to play memory or I Have Who Has. Use the word cards to start sentences. Use the letter cards to spell words to finish the sentence.*
Ex: I see the c a t.
**Try spelling words with your letter cards. Can you spell mom, dad, dog, cat, run and more? Go on a word hunt when reading books together. How many sight words can you find?**
In Math we will be finishing our unit on graphing. We will work on Geometry and Fractions. We are continuing to work on identifying the numbers 0-20. The teen numbers give us a good challenge. Thirteen K4 kids can count to 100 and have joined the “100 Club!” We will end the year working on addition and subtraction. Use the counters and fishbowl Math Mat in your toolkit to practice adding and subtracting.
In Science we will work on our animal classification. The animals included in March are the xenops, yak, and zebra.
On Thursday April 26th our school will have an OPEN HOUSE. We hope to see all of you on that night. The children will be so excited to show parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends and neighbors their room and school!
Reminders:
Our Library day is every Thursday. Please remind your child to return his/her library book so that he/she may check out a new one.
Show and Tell is on Tuesday – the show and tell must start with the letter of the week. Ex: Oo – octopus, oval, otter, octagon, etc. Show and tell will end for the year when we finish the alphabet. J The last show and tell day will be Tuesday, April 17th.
PLEASE check the April Class and Snack Calendars in your child’s binder for class events and the snack calendar. Also, class wish list items are listed on the calendars each month.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to call me at school or at home.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Testory
